Apex Mountain Skihill - An Insider's Guide

Need a change of scenery and some sunshine? Just 30 minutes from Penticton, Apex Mountain sits above the valley cloud cover, offers plenty of powder snow for skiers and snowboarders, and boasts an average temperature of –4 degrees C.

The quad chair will quickly take you to the top of the mountain. If you're looking for the "blue runs" then turn to the left and head for the triple chair. You'll find a lot of groomed runs with a beautiful fall line. The only thing you have to contend with is the slowness of the Triple Chair. But relax, enjoy the scenery and the sunshine and remember it is warmer on this side of the mountain.

If "black runs" are what you're after, then you have a real treat in store. Apex has a lot of challenging blacks, and when there is fresh powder...well, there's nothing sweeter!

Try my favourite first run off the quad: down the Great Wall, down the Ridge Run to the Triple, then the Finger, and back along the trail to the Quad. Now you've warmed up your legs!

Apex even boasts a current Olympic athlete. Our Kristi Richards competed in the 2005 Olympics and is on the 2010 team in the Freestyle event. Apex has even named a run after her!

And a nice "Green Run" to end the day is Ben's Run. This was named after a young boy from England, who loved to ski at Apex. Sadly, he died far too young of leukemia, and the mountain named his favourite run after him.

Still feeling energetic? Try their night skiing and tubing on weekends. Lace on your blades and glide the kilometre-long fully maintained adventure skating loop, or the outdoor regulation sized skating rink.

Come summer, take a break from the beach and drive up for a weekend wander amid serene alpine meadows rampant with wildflowers and surrounded by breathtaking views.

Have time for a longer getaway? Accommodations range from fullservice hotels to chalets, cabins, and a hostel.

Getting there: Take Green Mountain Road and follow the signs. If you’re not equipped for winter driving, take advantage of the Tim Hortons Snow Bus. The shuttle operates weekends and holidays from stops near their Summerland, Skaha Lake Rd. and Westminster locations, or hop aboard at the Super Save on Green Mountain Road.
