Maya Counselling has been in operation for 10 years. The two counsellors, Janet White, M.Sc, R.C.C. and Ann Richardson, M.A., R.C.C. have over 60 years of counselling experience between the two of them. Prior to working in private practice, they each held various other counselling positions for 20 years. They both have Masters Degrees in Counselling Psychology and are members of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. Their work is client centred, they update their skills regularly and are eclectic in their approach using their experience to choose the theories and techniques that may be helpful for each client.
Janet is also a clinical supervisor and educator, teaching at the University of Victoria for 20 years. Ann specializes in Play Therapy and has been trained in expressive therapies for children.
What Is Play Therapy?
For children, play is the way they relate to others and learn about their world. Using creative play, they can express themselves, create fantasy worlds, socialize and work through troubling problems and issues in their young lives.
Through counseling and play therapy, children can express their emotions and thoughts in a safe, accepting environment with a counselor trained to read the messages and symbols of play. Through play, art and other expressive therapies, children can work through situations they do not have the experience or vocabulary to talk about and share. In play therapy, play is the language of the child and toys are the words.
Play therapy is especially helpful for children going through:
- separation
- divorce
- the death of a loved one
- self-esteem issues
- school difficulties
- trauma such as an accident, illness or abuse.
Through play, children can make sense of their world, deal with their emotions and begin to heal themselves.
The First Session
You can phone or email for an appointment. The first session is more like a consultation to see if there is a good client/counsellor fit. The time is used for assessment of the issues/problems and doing an intake form if the client and counsellor decide to do some work together.
